Here are 2 ideas of beaches I like going to in the Gard. They are easily accessible for people living or staying in the area between Nimes and Montpellier. The best time to go to the beach in summer is the morning of course. If you arrive around 10am you don’t need to fight for parking. I recommend leaving before lunch time as the sun just gets to hot (unless you are having lunch in the shade of one of the beach restaurants). In this way you also avoid all the trafic leaving the beach around 4-5pm.
PLAGE DE L’ESPIGUETTE – This is the most wild and beautiful beach of the area! It is situated not far from Aigues-Mortes. You have to walk across dunes quite a bit to actually get to the sea (that’s what makes this beach so unusual, wild and beautiful). So it is not ideal if you have young children. The solution in that case is to use the only restaurant and private beach of the Espiguette called “Les Pieds Nus”. They come and fetch you with a buggy just after the dunes once you are parked on the free car park. The setting is magical!
To get to the plage de l’Espiguette (and use the free car park!!!): Take the direction of the Route de l’Espiguette / at the round about just after some ranches, turn right towards the Camping de l’Espiguette / At the level of the minigolf, turn left and park in the free car park.
BOUCANET – This is a calm family beach, in the Grau du Roi Rive Droite (not the nasty commercial part of the Grau). If you arrive at 10am you always find free parking space just next to the beach.
To get there: type “Bd du Docteur Jean Bastide, Le Grau-du-Roi” into google map or your SatNav. That’s the name of the coastal street where you will find lots of parking space.
See you at the beach!!!
